My friend and I gave a 2-day seminar on comics and scientific communication in September. I had the participants do an exercise taken from the excellent book by Jessica Abel and Matt Madden: Drawing Words & Writing Pictures. I did the exercise (the 1st comics I've drawn in awhile) along with them and explained my decisions. I probably took 30 mins or so.
Scenario 1: A ball crashes through a window into a kitchen and rips through the newspaper of a person sitting in the room. The person reacts to the window breaking. Optional: A dog catches the ball in midair after it comes through the newspaper.
I wanted the ball to lead the reader to the next panel and eventually to the dog. The dog in panel 2 is in the same spot as panel 3 to help lead the eyes again.
It was really fun to "solve the problem."
